Coon Supper 2010   posted January 10, 2010

Anyone interested in politics that has lived in Arkansas more than a year has surely heard of the Coon Supper.  I have been interested in politics since I was in elementary school and have heard many times stories from those who had been to this annual event in Gillett, AR.  So I guess it was no surprise when I was invited to--and it was strongly suggested to me that I needed to attend -- this event.

I know that this yearly ritual is certainly not a forum for conservative republicanism.  However, having grown up on a rice and soybean farm in east Arkansas, I certainly didn't mind to mix it up with the great folks in the First District.  I would like to thank the Farmers and Businessmen's Club for putting on this great event.  My wife and I felt very welcomed.  Many have asked how we liked the coon.  Gina and I both tried it and would have to say it isn't too bad.  But it really isn't about the coon.  I guess the coon portion of it is what makes this occasion unique.  There are many gatherings like this around the state, some serving catfish, chicken, deer, chili, or some just do an old-fashioned pot-luck.  But the one thing that ALL of these events have in common is community!

As Arkansans we are all proud of our cities, small towns, and rural areas.  And when we all come together once or twice a year to promote something good, we all benefit.  The coon supper is interesting, but as one local resident told me, it was really about the community and the great fellowship.  I think she got it right.  We had a wonderful time.
